Canada funding cuts drop lake research program

Federal funding cuts in Canada closed down the Experimental Lakes Area in Ontario, a dedicated research facility for lake science. Open since the 1960’s the 58-lake system helped instill a phosphate control program in the St. Laurence Great Lakes Basin and proved biodiversity damage in water below a pH of 6. Ownership of the facilities may be transferred to universities and non-government organizations, said a Department of Fisheries and Oceans spokesperson.
